The Curtain Track Measurement That Decides Your Whole Open-Plan Window Wall
Ceiling pocket depth is locked in before any fabric arrives. How motor clearance, track length and weight limits decide what you can hang across a wide span.

Open-plan living solved a lot of problems and created one that nobody warns you about: the windows got enormous, and the hardware that covers them did not automatically scale up to match.
I have watched this play out more than once. Someone finishes a beautiful great-room renovation — twelve feet of glass, maybe a corner return — picks a heavy lined drapery they love, and then discovers three weeks before install that the track they specified tops out well short of the span, or that the motor they wanted will not physically fit inside the ceiling pocket the builder already framed and drywalled.
That last one is the expensive version. Fabric can be re-cut. A curtain pocket that is two centimetres too shallow has to be opened back up.
Start with the pocket, not the fabric
If you are building or renovating, the sequence most people follow is backwards. They choose fabric, then track, then discover the motor requirement last.
Flip it. The deepest constraint in a motorised system is the minimum curtain box depth, because it is the one number that gets locked into the architecture before anything soft arrives on site.
The range is narrower than you might expect, but the differences matter. Common residential curtain motors need somewhere between 10 cm and 15 cm of clear depth. The compact units — the ones most people end up with on a standard residential run — need about 10 cm. Mid-size motors want around 13 cm. The heavy-duty units, the ones you need if you are hanging serious weight across a long span, want 15 cm or more.
Ten versus fifteen centimetres sounds trivial written down. On a framing drawing it is the difference between a pocket that works and a pocket that gets rebuilt.
The three numbers that actually constrain you
Once you are past the pocket, motorised track selection comes down to a short list, and they interact:
Maximum track length. Residential motors generally run somewhere between 6 m and 10 m in a single continuous run. That top figure is the outlier, not the default — most units sit at 6 m or 8 m.
Maximum curtain weight. This is the one that catches people who fall for heavy fabric. Depending on the motor you are looking at roughly 30 kg, 50 kg, or 60 kg. A lined blackout velvet across a wide opening gets to 30 kg faster than you would guess.
Wall-to-wall deduction. A motorised track never spans the literal wall-to-wall measurement, because the motor housing occupies one end. Expect to lose somewhere around 4 cm to 5.5 cm, and more — 5 cm to 6.5 cm — if you have skirting or any protrusion the track has to clear.
That deduction is worth writing on your drawing in pen. It is the number most likely to be forgotten between the design conversation and the order, and unlike fabric, track is cut to a finished length.
When one run is the wrong answer
There is a point where the honest answer is to stop trying to solve a wide opening with a single track.
If your opening exceeds what a single motor handles, or your fabric weight is pushing against the ceiling of what the motor is rated for, split the run and use a centre draw. Two panels meeting in the middle. This is not a compromise — on a genuinely wide window wall it usually looks better anyway, because a single panel stacking to one side eats an enormous amount of glass when it is open.
Which raises the stack-back question that open-plan spaces make worse. Wide, heavy, generously gathered drapery needs somewhere to go when it is open. If the only place for it to stack is across the glass, you have spent money on a view and then covered part of it permanently.
Curved and cornered openings
Corner windows and bay returns are where track selection stops being about numbers and starts being about whether the system has the parts.
What you want to confirm before ordering: whether the profile has proper curved sections available — 90 degree and 135 degree are the common ones — rather than a track that has been bent on site, which never runs as smoothly and tends to be where the carriers start to catch a year later.
Also ask whether the system offers both side mounting and top mounting. Ceilings in renovations are rarely as cooperative as they are in drawings, and a profile that only fixes one way will eventually meet a joist that disagrees.
The spec sheet question
Here is the practical filter I would apply to any track supplier, whether you are going through a designer or sourcing directly.
Ask for the aluminium specification. A real answer sounds like 6063-T5 alloy, wall thickness 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm, supplied in 6.7 m standard lengths, with a stated section size. A vague answer — "premium aluminium", "heavy duty" — usually means the person you are talking to is a reseller who has never seen the extrusion die.
The same filter applies to motors. If a supplier can tell you the curtain box depth, the wall-to-wall deduction, and the weight rating for each motor they carry, they are working from real product data. One small thing that changes how the room feels
Quiet operation is undersold. In a closed bedroom, track noise is a minor annoyance. In an open-plan space where the kitchen, dining and living areas share air, a motor cycling at the wrong pitch carries across the entire floor.
Several profiles offer an optional silent strip built into the rail, and higher-torque motors are generally quieter under load than a smaller motor working at the edge of its rating. If you are automating anything that will run on a schedule — morning open, evening close — spend the small premium. You will hear it every day for a decade.

Get the curtain box depth confirmed before the ceiling closes. Everything else on this list can be solved later with a different fabric, a different heading, or a second run of track. That one cannot.
