How to Design a Basement Entertainment Space Around a Home Bar

A basement, when designed with entertainment in mind, can be one of the most enjoyable areas of a home. There are so many great ways to design a space that is ideal for home bar entertaining, and if planned thoughtfully, your home bar can be the focal point of a great entertaining space.

A well-designed basement is a functional and amicable space. It is key that guests feel at home when they are visiting, and for that to happen, a number of elements have to come together and function as a unit to create and nurture good times and experiences. As was said, the focal point of the space would ideally be a well-designed home bar. However, that will simply be the eye-catcher if you design the rest of the basement around it and include seating, a clever use of lighting, storage for glassware, utensils, and bottles, and several activity spaces, each one to house different types of fun, games, and events to entertain your guests.

Start With the Way You Entertain

Before you start choosing out a new countertop or bar stools, consider how you will be using your new space. If you like to host casual gatherings where you watch a lot of sports, then a space with seating for watching TV would be the way to go. If, on the other hand, you like to host cocktail parties and like to have very casual conversations, then a space to relax and have quiet conversations would be better suited. If you have kids, then you need a space that can change up to fit the needs of your family. This may be a space that can change up from movie night to game night to a space to have dinner with large groups of family and friends.

Think about the average number of people that will be in your basement at any time, and set up the seating in the entertainment space to accommodate that number of people. For example, you may have a bar with 3 stools at it, but the rest of the seating in the entertainment space will be sofas and chairs. In that case, you will want to have a number of lounge chairs and sofas throughout the space that will provide enough seating for all of the people in the space, including those who are sitting at the bar.

This also can depend on what you will be serving from the bar. If you will be serving only drinks, then the bar may be small with only 3 stools. But if you will be serving food as well as drinks, then you may need a larger bar with a sink and refrigerator and even a microwave or area for preparing the food.

Plan the Room Before Designing the Bar

Plan the entire basement space before deciding on the bar. This would include how the space will function or how one intends to use the space. By determining the uses of the space, one can better develop a well-functioning space. Homeowners planning major changes to the layout may want to consider professional basement renovation services before finalizing the placement of the bar and other entertainment features. If one were to have a lot of functions or activities in the space, such as watching sports, having quiet cocktails and conversation, families with children having movie nights, playing games with family and friends, etc. This would allow for a more functional space that would work well for entertainers.

Considering space, a corner-installed bar is a good option for smaller basements. It is easy to be positioned in a corner, allowing more space in the room. A peninsula or island-style bar would divide up an entertainment area into individual sections of a room.

Create Distinct Activity Zones

A successful entertainment space usually includes more than one activity. The room might combine a bar, television area, gaming table, reading corner, or conversation lounge.

Seating Areas: Space planning for entertainment rooms includes planning the locations for seating within activity zones. The type of furniture selected often establishes boundaries or dividers between areas for TV watching and lounging. For example, a large section of sofas may form a boundary between an area for viewing a large-screen TV and the area for an island-style home bar. An area rug in a large entertainment room can define the boundaries for seating on a large floor.

Divide and Conquer – Keep Loud Activities Away from Quiet Conversations. To have a great and fun basement home bar entertaining space, you must remember that there are always going to be some people in the group that like to participate in loud activities such as watching a lot of sports and movies and playing games and others who prefer quieter, more relaxing conversations. For this reason, it is recommended to have the loud areas a bit removed from the quieter conversation lounge. A good example would be having a sectional sofa in a television viewing area and having the bar in a slightly different area of the room. An area rug would then define the seating group.

Use Layered Lighting

Since most basements are lacking in natural light, it is very important to plan the basement lighting. One very bright ceiling light in a basement is usually not enough and can give the room a very box-like feel. By using different layers of light such as recessed lights in the ceiling, pendant lights over the bar, wall sconces, and floor lamps, you can create a warm and inviting space. Additionally, by using light throughout the space, you can highlight certain features of the room, such as a built-in bookcase with lights to showcase all of your favorite books.

Instead, combine recessed ceiling lights with pendant lights above the bar, wall sconces, floor lamps, or illuminated shelving. Each lighting layer should serve a purpose.

In addition to task lighting above your counters and around your food preparation areas, there are many other choices of soft lighting around your home that will create warm and inviting spaces for relaxation. By installing dimmers for your lighting, you can create the exact ambiance that you wish to create for your social occasions. Many homeowners like to create a brighter atmosphere near their bars and around their counters and then a softer, more muted atmosphere in the rest of the seating areas of their homes.

Include Comfortable Seating and Storage

Stools for a bar need to allow for sufficient room for people to sit comfortably at the bar to put glasses, and to return to sit at another time. The seating in the rest of the room needs to be comfortable enough to encourage people to linger in the room.

Storage: Try to include plenty of storage space in your basement for everything that you will need in the room. From storage for glasses, serving trays, games, blankets, and even electronics, you can choose between closed storage cabinetry to keep clutter out of sight and open storage such as shelves for storing glassware, beautiful bottles, and accessories to decorate your home bar.

Each feature should support the way the room is to be used, and together they can make for a great entertainment space where the home bar is just the centerpiece of the room.
