The Nostalgic Tavern Trend: How To Balance Vintage Bar Decor With Contemporary Design

Nostalgia is back in bars and restaurants as these establishments are focused on recreating the feeling of past decades, specifically the 80s and 90s. For years, many bars across the world gravitated towards clean and minimalist design as this provides visual calm and creates an Instagram-worthy aesthetic. But recently, bar owners have started to decorate with items that evoke happy memories as a psychological buffer against stress and anxiety, especially during difficult times.

According to Evan Collins, architectural designer and co-founder of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, bar owners are gravitating towards the ‘nostalgic tavern’ aesthetic because customers are longing for a friendlier, less trend-conscious version of our world. “In [politically turbulent] times like these, [there's a ] shift back into escapism and retro revival,” he explains. If you'd like to adopt this comforting design style into your bar without making your business look like the set of ‘Cheers,’ you're in luck. There are several ways to do a retro and modern mashup while keeping things cohesive at the same time. To incorporate the Nostalgic Tavern trend into your bar without going overboard, here's how to balance vintage bar decor with contemporary design.

Use Vintage Wall Decor and Art Techniques

Nostalgic design offers a sense of security, turning drinking spots into safe havens. To create a modern nostalgic experience, think about blending the warmth of the past with the clean design of the present. One of the easiest ways to do this is to use strategic wall decor and art techniques. This gives your bar a refreshed but uncluttered look, perfect if you have a small space to work with.

Look for vintage alcohol or alcohol-related print ads and frame them in custom picture mounts to provide enhanced visual appeal to the prints. You can also look for old-school cocktail manuals or recipes, cigarette ads, or pop culture prints, pair them with modern or minimalist frames, and hang them on your walls. For a touch of kitsch, hang a neon vintage sign above your bar, but keep the bar itself clear and free of decor. To create a focal point in your bar, think about creating a mural on one of your walls featuring images of famous celebrities or TV shows from the 70s, 80s, or 90s. Consider a mural featuring the cast of ‘Charlie's Angels,’ ‘Friends,’ or 80s-era Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, and other iconic singers.

Add Functional Decor

You're probably thinking of adding more retro decorative items to your bar to give it a more nostalgic feel. But to prevent your establishment from looking like a vintage shop, choose items that are not just decorative, but also functional. Something as simple as a chalkboard wall or stand for menus can add rustic charm to your space. You can also use a ceramic cookie jar from the 90s to hold straws, or vintage saucers from the 70s to serve nuts and other bar snacks.

A vintage TV with a built-in VHS player can also be a good addition to your decor, but make sure to use it so it's not just collecting dust in the corner. Play old sitcoms on it, or create a ‘mixtape’ of 90s music videos, record it on a VHS tape, and play it with the sound on or off. To avoid a cluttered look, aim to make 80 percent of your decor modern with sleek lines and minimalist furniture, then use 20 percent for eye-catching, retro accents.

Create a Cohesive Color Palette

Using lots of colors in your design scheme can give your bar a 60s psychedelic feel. But if that's not the look that you're going for, think about creating a cohesive color palette to prevent your bar from looking too chaotic. Use neutral tones like beige, white, taupe, or gray on most walls, then add deep brown tables and seats to create a calm backdrop. This will allow vintage colors like mustard, olive green, maroon, or teal to pop. Also, mix rustic finishes like exposed brick and weathered wood with smooth surfaces like polished metal or marble to nail that retro-contemporary vibe.

Move away from minimalism by incorporating the Nostalgic Tavern trend into your bar design. Use colors, decor, and art wisely to create a curated eclectic look, and have a cozy and comfortable place that people will keep coming back to.
